Computer Geeks - Who Are They?

The word geek pertains to an odd person, an enthusiast, an expert-overly obsessed with things such as technology, intellect and the alike. Nerd, gimp, dweeb, dork and spod are akin to being a geek.

Nerd is a socially awkward person who had learned technical skills through the spare time they enjoy from being neglected. However, dork, still a socially awkward person but he doesn't have the intelligence to fill the void with technical pursuits. A dork is forced to do foolish activities. He is mostly alone with an XBOX (a video game console from Microsoft) and likes playing Halo (a science fiction video game) all day, everyday. Nevertheless, geek is an outwardly normal person who devotes his time to learn technical skills. They have a normal social life like anyone else. You can tell someone "he's a geek", if they acknowledge their own skills.

Earlier, geek is being described as an insult but recently turns out to be a compliment, a badge of honor to a particular field, an extra ordinary skill. In recent history, some geeks have promoted geek culture like for instance a geek humor and design a fashion statement like the so called geek chic. But still the definition remains to that of a person engrossed in his area of interest at the value of social skills, personal hygiene and status.

To be a computer geek is profitable and very fulfilling. Why? The highest paying jobs available and highly in demand is to be a computer guru or a geek. Becoming a computer geek means you have to learn a lot of computer stuff. Like for instance, you must learn the hardware and software of your computer, the specs (meaning technical specifications) of a computer, how to use your computer's command line, learn to ask about anything, learn a programming language (CSS, HTML for web pages) and basic repair procedures, interact with others, learn to recognize computer viruses, spyware, etc., use a restrictive firewall and an open source operating system (BSAD or linux), use shortcuts, know how the internet works, always remember to keep things simple and expand your knowledge.

A true computer geek never stops learning. They are always open to something new and if they don't understand, they ask for help. Their objective is to collect knowledge and put things together into a perspective. Frequently, they read articles on Wikipedia. They too join computer forums for programming languages or just mere regular forums. Computer geeks do not talk with chat room languages but use command line to write instead. They are as always a person with genuine interest and passion on computer technology who wants to learn everything.

Top 10 Geeky Dating Mistakes Us Geeks Make

Dating for us geeks is better than ever. Geek is chic and we no longer have to hide the passion for our nerdy habits. We can express ourselves confidently and still get the girl. However there are some things we tend to do that turn women off. Here is a list of the top ten dating mistakes us geeks make.

1 ) Over-Explaining

I remember when a girl asked me how is Bio-Diesel made when I told her I use it in my car. I think I went on for close to fifteen minutes explaining from start to finish the process from turning vegetable oil into Bio-Diesel. She finally stopped me and teased me pretty hard for it. Your date may not find it as endearing.

2 ) Being Condescending

Just because we know a lot about a lot of things never gives us the right to make someone feel stupid. Sometimes simply just taking a moment to ask "How familiar are you with it?" before explaining it as if they were five years old will allow you to save face.

3 ) Know-it-all/always being right

It is hard being smarter than everyone around us (at least we think we are). As soon as I learned to try to see someone else's point of view fully before explaining my opinion it was a lot more comfortable to be around me. Try to see someone else's side of things first and relate to it.

4 ) Fashion - Tennis shoes all the time

If you are the guy who wears white tennis shoes in every situation, it is time to go shopping. Buy yourself some nicer shoes for work or casual social events. You don't have to go crazy but even some more trendy sneakers will go a long way. Sketchers make lots of inexpensive shoes that are as comfortable as tennis shoes but are a little bit more fashionable. You could even branch out and try some more fashionable going out shoes or boots. Just make sure they aren't too out there if that is not your personality. Women do notice shoes.

5 ) Fashion - Wearing clothes that don't fit

It is time to stop dressing like the clothes were hand-me-downs. Oversize shirts do not hide your gut or your lack of biceps. The shoulder seam of your shirts should be within an inch of the corner of your shoulder, not down on your arm. Pants should not be baggy; while they shouldn't be skin tight they should fit well without being too constrictive. Ask a sales woman to help you find sizes that fit and try going too small and too big to understand what the right fit is.

6 ) Fashion - Out of date clothes

Wearing a t-shirt or sweatshirt that was your parting gift from high school is not a statement of loyalty; it's a statement that you are too lazy to buy new clothes once in a while. Retire your clothes if they are out of date. I usually try to not wear clothes longer than one to two years and sometimes three if I don't wear them that often. Subtle changes over a few years actually show up and while people may not point it out, it makes you look dated.

7 ) Texting or emailing while talking

I have a bad habit of surfing the web when talking to friends and even women. If you are having a conversation, put down the game, the phone, the email, etc. Pay attention and be in the conversation

8 ) Being defensive when teased

Roll with the punches. Go read a bit about the improv idea "yes and," and learn how to be more playful and flirty.

9 ) Asking for feedback on a date

This is a big one. Don't ever ask how you are doing on a date. Don't ask whether she likes you or not or if she is having fun. Nothing shows more insecurity then checking in frequently on a date. Have fun and enjoy your time together. If she is not into you, or not having fun, that is her responsibility to end the date or tell you. It only makes it awkward for you to ask. If she says no, what are you going to do about it? Getting to the second date will tell you more than any answer she gives you.

10 ) Self Deprecating

Comedians are great at self deprecating humor. Leave it for them to do. While you shouldn't be bragging, conversely don't put yourself down. It shows a lot of insecurity. I mean honestly when a woman tells me she is fat, I almost want to smack her. It is like fishing for a compliment, I don't want to pander to her insecurities. You shouldn't make women feel that way either by putting yourself down.

How to Choose Geek Chic Glasses!

Just a few short years ago wearing eyeglasses was still considered an absolute taboo in the fashion world - only to worn, or even considered to be worn, if they were truly required! Contacts had already made their debut, and were allowing all of those suffering from vision-correction ditch their specs, and finally join the ranks among the most stylish! Glasses were so not cool, and it never would have been a consideration that they ever would be! That was just a few short years ago. However, now, when you walk down the street, you can't turn around without spotting five different people in eyeglasses! The thing of it is: you don't just see people in glasses everywhere, you see people in the same style glasses everywhere! This style has completely taken over our schools, offices, and of course: catwalks! So, how can you take back your vision-correction needs and choose some hip new geek chic glasses? Follow this guide for some helpful tips!

There are quite a few different looks to the geek chic eyeglasses frames. The main identifying features of this styled glasses are the material, distinguishing bright color palettes, and larger "geeky" lenses. The most popular of the geek chic eyeglasses come in thick black plastic full frames, with the classic wayfarer-styled lenses. While these frames are hitting the streets in a plethora of different brighter color options, black remains the most commonly seen. These frames were the first of the geek chic style, but they are certainly not the last.

With this new fashion trend, came back the classic types of glasses from the 1950s. This look includes thick plastic frames, that sit above faux semi-rimless, full-framed lenses. The lenses are connected to the thick plastic top and are surrounded typically by thin metal (that adds to the illusion of them being semi-rimless). They usually continue with the wayfarer styling, but of course, the bottom of the lenses differ tremendously. These frames can more modernly be seen on the show Mad Men, as they were the "geeky" style - even back in the 50s! The last notable fashion statement making its debut again, back in the geek chic trend, is also from generations past - similar to John Lennon's classic frames. The lenses are perfectly round circles, usually fully surrounded by thick plastic, that are connected by a matching thinner metal bridge and metal stems sticking back. These frames - with the exception of the lens shapes - are basically the opposite of the others. However, one thing they all tend to have in common is that thick plastic - it's certainly made its comeback!

Now that you know the main styles you're looking for when choosing your next pair of glasses frames, you'll be well on your way to blowing everyone away with your fashion know-how! Glasses can be very expensive, so building up your geek chic collection will go very slowly if you choose to buy glasses the old fashioned way! When you look for eyeglasses online, you end up spending far less money - and that means more options for your new stock!

What is a Geek?

The term geek has traditionally been one that is used in a nearly derogatory manner towards those that value intellectual stimulation and studying deep into various fields such as science, technology, and art. Geeks have always been absorbed into learning as much as they can about their interests and surroundings, sometimes putting themselves at the risk of foregoing social norms. This can make geeks appear strange to much of society, often making them the target of mockery and even ridicule.

However, in the last few years, the term "geek" as well as the people that proudly call themselves geeks have enjoyed a surge in popularity and social acceptance. More than ever, intelligence is valued over traditional forms of popularity, especially in adolescents. For instance, it is just as common to see geeks interacting with members of the opposite sex as sports jocks today, whereas just a few years ago they were a much more isolated group.

This rise in popularity of geeks can be attributed to a few causes. The first, and perhaps most relevant, is the rise in popularity of the World Wide Web. The Web has caused the average person to have less of a fear concerning computers and technology then they did just a few years ago. This has, in turn, allowed the average person to become more familiar with the world in which technologically-adept geeks thrive. Since many IT professionals that work in the corporate environment are self-proclaimed geeks, their abundance in numbers has shifted the perception of geeks from that of non-conforming outsiders to that of any other person with acceptable idiosyncrasies.

Another contribution to the popularity of geeks is the fashion world's acceptance and promotion of "geek chic." More than ever before, fashion designers are spinning the traditional look of what the common perception of how a geek dresses into designs that are just as at home on the runway as they are in a computer lab. Additionally, the popularity of portable devices such as mp3 players, laptop computers, and mobile phones has caused fashion designers to accessorize these otherwise geeky tools into their ensembles.

The more that our society becomes reliant on technology and science, the higher percentage of geeks there will be among the population. Geeks' devotion to learning, knowledge, and academia has always ensured that many of them enjoy higher stations in life as a result of their accomplishments. Now, more than ever, is a great time to enjoy being known as a geek.

Geek Chic

A tall guy of about 20 walks into a Starbucks. He's wearing tight black jeans, a black band t-shirt, and glasses; he carries a laptop case. He orders a latté, sets up his computer, and begins to play Halo 3. How can you tell whether or not he's a geek?

It's the latté. Geeks almost always drink espresso.

In a world where geekiness is the new cool, it's becoming increasingly more difficult to spot the posers from the pixel pushers. Everybody seems to want to jump on the geek bandwagon; television shows are full of science fiction angles, and even the coolest of the cool claim to have nerd roots. In this age of advanced technology, it's kind of difficult to tell who actually belongs in the category of "geek" and who is just a poser. True geeks were on board with geek trends long before it was popular; some people today simply have jumped on the back of the geek moped and are riding the next wave.

Take a look at our television icons, for instance. Ugly Betty, one of TV's most popular shows, features a girl who looks like someone's prom date nightmare. She is a geek poster girl, from her loud, uncoordinated outfits to her shiny, in-your-face braces. The fact that she works at a fashion magazine just underscores her lack of conformity, and when we see her triumph week after week over the beautiful people, even those ex-cheerleaders must feel a little tug of excitement. Sci fi and fantasy shows are all the rage, from Lost to Moonlight to The Dresden Files, and they're not just playing on basic cable, they're in network prime time. And the ultimate geek, Harry Potter, is the most popular non-existent kid in history.

Fashion has even slipped into the realm of the pasty-faced gamer. Check out ads for fashionable eyewear: The frames that used to be costume pieces for kids to wear with their pocket protectors and suspenders are now high fashion (and expensive.) The high-top Converse that used to separate the rebel from the rest are now advertised in every shoe store in America, and everyone wears them. You can even go online and create your own custom geek shoe. Geek t-shirts are hawked on numerous websites, and wearing them is almost a badge of honor, a membership into an exclusive club that rivals the popular people for importance.

Smart Is the New Sexy: The Growing Popularity of Geek Glasses

Geek glasses are everywhere these days. This is of course, somewhat of an irony, since geek eyewear, and geek chic in particular, is a paean to individuality and to a stubborn refusal to blend in with the crowd. Spectacles, which look like they were designed for people who can recite the entire script of the Star Trek franchise, were not supposed to be a mass-market item, and certainly were not supposed to be the current epitome of high fashion. Yet here they are, in many fashion pages and runways, and worn by many celebrities who are all supremely confident that they look good. Actors, musicians, and athletes have come to incorporate them in their images, and increasingly the people on the streets are wearing them as well.

Although some might question a celebrity's decision to adorn geek styled eyewear, it has to be said that these people actually do look good in their nerdy spectacles. A few famous rock stars of the 20th century may have made geek glasses an iconic fashion item, but now even young fashion conscious people who may not even need prescription glasses are wearing them too, in an effort to look even more appealing to others. Short sighted Hollywood actors are a good example of this; you hardly see a picture of them these days without posing in geeky eyewear. Many rappers and hip-hop artists have now brought this style to the music scene. Just try watching the latest music videos these days without spotting a singer or rap artist adorning a pair of outrageously oversized geek glasses.

Women, who are considered by fashion experts to be the final arbiters of what is cool, have weighed in on the issue as well, and their vote is overwhelmingly pro-geek. It's strange to think that only around 5 or 6 years ago, any girl seen wearing a pair of 'nerdy' looking oversized glasses would have been ridiculed for her odd taste in eyewear. Don't forget, today's hip and trendy youngsters were not around in the 1970's, when this style was last in fashion.

Geeky specs are the hallmark of nerdy people everywhere, and it may be a fitting tribute to be smart enough to know how to choose the proper frame. It's the frame that defines the 'geekiness' of the glasses, and not the thickness of the lenses. In fact, some people even wear them without any lenses at all, a trend that may have been started by Japanese schoolgirls because the lenses interfered with their overly long eyelashes.

As for the frames, make sure that you choose one that suits the shape of your face. Geek frames come in various shapes and sizes, and they may be round, similar to what Harry Potter wears, or they may be square and rectangular like Clark Kent's. When you wear retro or geek styled eyewear, don't be afraid to pair them with outfits in other styles. Geek glasses may make you look smart, but it would be a good idea to actually be fashion-smart as well.

Geek Shirts - Cool and Fashionable Wear

Geek shirts are becoming popular nowadays. You would likely see people, young and old, walking down the street sporting shirts with prints that say, "It Must Be User Error" or "Obey Gravity, It's Law". And it is not only limited to men. Ladies are also embracing this type of get-up, so you won't be surprised if the sexy chick waiting in line next to you wears "Talk Nerdy To Me" shirt.

What Is A Geek? The word "geek" originally refers to the performers in a carnival whose act includes biting the heads off chickens and eating glass to entertain people. After a while, a person who got paid to do work considered odd or out of the ordinary by mainstream society also referred to as a geek. A geek used to have a negative connotation. It's not something you want to be called decades ago, I'm sure. But, after years of ridicule and never getting the girls out, geeks these days are hot. The term has become more complimentary, denoting extra ordinary skills within particular fields particularly in the technical field.  Computer programmers, for instance, think highly of the term because it gives them special status within the computing community.

Geek Chic
Over the years, some geeks have developed a geek culture, such as geek humor and obscure references on T-shirts. Geek chic refers to the breaking of traditional fashion rules and taking up of stereotypically not so popular geek characteristics such as thick glasses, plastic pocket protectors, computer video games, and floodwater pants.

Why Wear A Geek Shirt
Geek shirts have come a long way since its first entrance to the fashion world. High tech people often find themselves enjoying special status by how obscure the logo on their T-shirt is.  The rarer the logo or saying, the better.  It gives them some sense of pride in wearing a T-shirt that is relatively rare but that real geeks can identify and admire.

The T-shirt is the cornerstone of the tech geek's attire. Some may see T-shirt as an anti-status symbol, but for the geeks, geek T-shirts project a knowledgeable person who knows that what is inside his head is more important than what is on his back.

Today's geek shirts are smart and elegant, with stylish graphic designs and cool, clever sayings like, "Life would be easier if I had the source code," "Hacker Inside," and "There's no place like 127.0.0.1". Being a geek is fashionable. Just because you are a gamer or a geek doesn't mean you should dress like a dork. Wear a geek shirt and be proud that you are a geek.

Fashion for Internet Geeks

There are many clothing options out there for internet geeks. The first thing to consider when shopping for clothes is how comfortable they are. If you are an internet geek, you probably spend most of your time surfing the web and playing online games. Because of this extended amount of time sitting down, you want to purchase clothes that are comfortable to wear and easy to wash. T-shirts and denim jeans are often the style of choice for the average internet geek.

Many t-shirts designed specifically for you may contain different logos and sayings that the average internet geek would love. There are shirts available that have an internet logo saying pasted on the front of them. These sayings can range from "LOL" to "TTYL". Geek shirts are usually very plain in design and color, often sporting a dark blue or black theme. A simple saying or logo across the front is the first sign of a true geek shirt. There are also shirts that have particular designs on them, such as a shirt that has a wi-fi detector on the front or a browser symbol.

When it comes to other clothing for internet geeks, the possibilities are truly limitless. Most geeks adorn themselves in a pair of ripped jeans and some comfortable sneakers. Others may wear wrist cuffs and a cool-looking hat. Mixing and matching different looks is a great idea to create an amazing geek-friendly outfit. Depending on where you buy your clothing, you can create a geeky wardrobe for just a few hundred dollars.

Fashion Tips For Geeks - 6 Do's and Don'ts

Let's face it. You may be super smart and talented, but you can't coordinate an outfit even if your precious Star Trek collection depended on it. Geeks/nerds get a bad rap for not having any fashion sense, and rightfully so. From pleated Dockers to company logo t-shirts, there's no end to the amount of fashion ridicule they're subjected to. Well fear no more! Here are 6 fashion nerdy Dos and Don'ts.

1. Do: Take Care of Your Hair
The whole world doesn't need to know you just woke up, threw on some clothes and ran out of the door. Take time in pampering your hair (yes, I said pamper). Nothing makes a girl giddier than neat, fresh smelling hair to play with. If you like the Johnny Depp messy look, you can still do it with some style: use hair wax or serum to give a more relaxed, yet tame look. Just apply a small amount after a shower and run it through your hair with your fingers.

2. Don't: Wear Company Logo Shirts
Company logo t-shirts are for work and only work. Ok, I take that back -- they're also acceptable to wear around the house and for yard work, but that's where I draw the line. If still you're itching to wear logos, go with brand names like Polos and Nautica.

3. Do: Master the Art of Layering
For a casual look, pick out a plain or graphic t-shirt and layer it on top of an undershirt or camisole. Don't be afraid to play with colors. For a more dressed up look, try pairing a collared shirt with a vest or cardigan. Layering makes you look more polished and put together. If you're a skinny nerd, layering also helps give more bulk to your appearance.

4. Don't: Wear Pleated Pants
I know it's tempting to buy those pleated Docker pants at JC Penny, but please try to refrain from doing so, even if they're on sale for $19.99. Pleated pants make your hips look big and are VERY unflattering when you sit down. Go for a straight fit instead.

5. Do: Accessorize, But NOT With Gadgets
Ditch those cell phones clipped at the waist and bluetooth ear pieces. They scream geekness. Instead, accessorize with scarves, leather bracelets, studded belts, hats, etc. If you've got a lot of things to carry, consider getting a man bag (aka messenger bag). David Beckham carries one, maybe you should too.

6. Do: Wear Contacts or Stylish Glasses
If you're not a contact lens type of guy, consider getting some trendy glasses. Spend some time researching online to find the right glasses for your face shape. And don't be afraid to walk into a store and ask for advice. After all, those eye specialists help people pick glasses every day. They usually know what's hot and what's not.

There you have it. I hope some of these tips help find your inner swagger. In the end, it's all about how you carry yourself. So feel confident in what you're wearing and wear it well!
